Car Parking Review
Craven District Council is seeking the views of residents, businesses and employers on its approach to car parking across the District.
Some fundamental changes are being proposed including the introduction of residents parking schemes in Skipton so there is a particular emphasis on the use of car parks and car parking in Skipton.
Craven District Council has a number of car parks across the District but only charges for car parking in Ingleton, Settle and Skipton. As well as day to day charges for car parking, the Council sells short and long stay permits. From 1st April 2006, the Council is proposing to increase the cost of a residents’ long-stay car parking permit from £100 to £150 and for short-stay (up to three hours) to £30 from £20.
There are suggestions that the cost of the residents’ long-stay parking permit should be increased substantially in the future to more accurately reflect the costs of car parking. For example, if a driver was paying the actual cost of long stay car parking in Skipton, based on five days a week for 48 weeks per year, this would amount to £840. One suggestion is that the permit costs should be around 50% of this amount.
Craven District Council is investigating the use of car parks for short/medium/long stay car parking. The current proposals is to prioritise Skipton Town Centre Car Parks for short and medium stay parking (up to 4 hours).
Craven District Council provides 1169 off street parking spaces in Skipton town centre;
- 187 Cavendish Street
- 419 Coach Street/Canal Basin
- 445 Town Hall
- 81 Waller Hill
- 37 Keighley Road
This equates to 606 long stay and 563 short stay spaces. On a number of days in the week (market days Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) these spaces are utilised to maximum occupancy during the core period of the day, between 11am and 3pm. A study by Mouchel Parkman in May 2004 suggests that the total off street car park provision for Skipton during peak times, (between 11 am and 3 pm) was above 90% occupancy, between 11 am and 12 noon and 1 pm and 2 pm.
